ARONSON Naoum (1873-1943)
Portrait of Leon Tolstoy
Plaster
Signed "N.Aronson" (illegible)
18.5 x 10 x 12 cm
This portrait of Leo Tolstoy is a special chapter in the work of Naoum Aronson. In the early 1900s, a sculptor already known in Paris for his magnificent portraits of famous composers and personalities, Aronson proposed the idea of creating a bust of the famous writer. Tolstoy initially refused to pose for the young sculptor, but after looking at photos of Aronson's work, he changed his mind and invited him to Yasnaya Polyana. Arriving at the home of Count Tolstoy's family, Aronson began with a bust of his wife Sofia Andreevna and a bas-relief of Tolstoy's daughter Tatiana.
Leo Tolstoy observes him for a while and recognizes that this young sculptor works well, but doesn't agree to pose specially, saying: "You can observe me when I work. When I work, you work next door". In his memoirs, Aronson recounts that the task was particularly difficult. He wanted to capture Tolstoy's personalitý his strength and present him as a great thinker of the century. Although they often went out for walks together and spent a lot of time talking, Naoum Aronson realized that he wouldn't be able to finish the bust on the spot. One day, while working, he caught Tolstoy's gaze. Suddenly, Leo Tolstoy agreed to pose for ten minutes. "I started working right away. During that first session, I was able to correct the bust a lot, and even Tolstoy noticed that the work had changed a lot. When he left the room I was sweating and tired as ever." Naum Aronson spent two weeks at Tolstoy's home, making around 80 drawings (some of which were finished in Paris), a bust and bas-relief of Sofia Andreevna, a bas-relief of Tatiana Lvovna. He wanted to return to Yasnaya Polyana for another project, but this idea never materialized. The bronze bust of Leo Tolstoy was cast from plaster in 1902 and exhibited at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts. Later, already in Paris, the work was reproduced in a smaller version and also cast in bronze.
