The great masters of Russian painting are less well known than their literary counterparts, especially those who practised their art before the 20ᵉ century, apart from very great names like Repin, painting was long dominated by icons, it was not until the 18ᵉ and especially the 19ᵉ century that the Russian soul was best expressed and of course the 20ᵉ century with the advent of modern art through the emergence of Kandinsky's abstract art.
For the 19ᵉ century, let us nevertheless mention Repin (1844-1930), Korovin (1861-1929), Savva Mamontov (1841-1918), Vereshagin (1842-1904), Shishkin (1831-1898), Levitan (1860-1900), Vrubel (1856-1910) and so many others to be rediscovered....
