MILYUKOV Pavel (1859-1943) - Lot 123
MILYUKOV Pavel (1859-1943) Autograph letter signed to Arnold, dated August 14, 1905, at Oudelnaya station, Finnish Railways 3 pp. in-12 on double wove paper (in English). Very rich political letter on the situation in Russia in 1905, by one of its leading figures. Paul Milyoukov (1859-1943) was one of the leading figures of the democratic opposition to the Tsarist regime of Nicholas II. A historian, he was first imprisoned twice in Ryazan, south of Moscow. In 1901, he was again imprisoned for six months for delivering a political speech in commemoration of the populist writer Pyotr Lavrov, who had left for the United States to give a series of speeches. This extremely rich letter was written some time after his return to Russia in 1905. It paints a picture of the country's terribly complex political situation. "We are all living in a state of perpetual excitement", he wrote. The forces united in the 1905 revolution are now in confrontation, paralyzing the Duma's action: "Our radical movement has overwhelmed us all, leading to unspeakable blunders and perpetually delaying the government's reforms." This one-upmanship on the part of the extreme left was likely to encourage reaction: "So that new efforts of reaction might appear concomitant with the beginnings of our political freedom." He outlines what will be his course of action throughout his political career: solid republican and democratic convictions, opposed to both radicalism and class egoism: "I do everything in my power not to follow the current and to ensure that social elements such as representatives of public opinion, keep in touch and act in a coordinated way, without turning to utopias or representing a selfish class interest." He goes on to discuss the creation of the Constitutional Democratic Party, the difficulties of which he already foresees: "At this very moment, we are setting up a major political party, which could bring us advantages in the coming election campaign, but which at the moment is sure to be discredited by socialist critics, without garnering the support of the real 'bourgeois' and 'landowners'."
