In 1914, Serge Diaghilev's Russian ballet caused a sensation in Parisian social life with the staging of the opera-ballet "Le Coq d'or", decorated by Russian artist Natalia Goncharova. Unusual costumes and sets, an explosion of color and extraordinary primitivism in the interpretation. The staging was a resounding success. It prompted Serge Diaghilev to ask Natalia Goncharova and Mikhail Larionov to join the company on a permanent basis. In 1915, the couple joined the Russian seasons in Switzerland, before settling permanently in Paris. After her success in St. Petersburg, Natalia Goncharova continued her quest for a new art form in France. In part, emigration exacerbated the artist's passion and pushed her even further in her search for new forms and colors in the East. Russia, now so far away, remained forever Natalia Goncharova's source of artistic inspiration. The dialogue between West and East in Goncharova's work created a new style. Extremely productive in her creation, Goncharova developed a whole series of techniques almost simultaneously (primitivism, rayonnism) to achieve "pure art". Goncharova is rightly regarded as one of the first artists of the Russian avant-garde to win over a worldwide audience.
The work "The Bridge", created in 1919 using the rayonnist technique, dates from the artist's early Paris period and is one of a series of rayonnist works on the theme of bridges, undoubtedly inspired by the work of Gustave Eiffel at the turn of the century.
Our work comes from the collection of Philippe Hupel. This atypical character, enamored of poetry, philosophy and freedom, who grew up and received a humanist education in post-war Paris, quickly distanced himself from his bourgeois milieu. Independent and non-conformist, he was attracted by the emergence of new theories and forms of expression in literature, music and painting. After working as a journalist in Bamako, and taking his first steps as a second-hand dealer at the Saint-Ouen flea market, he built up the capital to open his own gallery at the age of thirty, at 36, rue Mazarine in Paris. During the six years he spent running the gallery, Philippe Hupel ardently defended his interest in avant-garde artists. He was instrumental in introducing painters such as Natalia Goncharova, Stanley William Hayter, Robert Rauschenberg and Marie Vassilieff, to whom he dedicated two exhibitions in 1969 and 1971.
