MOUFLE, second half of the 18th century - first half of the 19th century

Red morocco, gold thread embroidery by Torzhok, printing
36.5 cm. Traces of use (traces of rubbing, soiling, buttons missing).
A famous Russian morocco mittens from a traditional boyar costume, made by Russian craftsmen probably for a ball or show. The object is richly decorated with floral motifs in the famous Torzhok gold-thread stitching technique, and bears the traditional Cyrillic inscription "Although water in a glass / was a hand in a morocco" on the side. Very rare.
An almost identical pair of mittens is preserved in the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and dated to the 17th century. However, the fact that the inscription decorating the muffle is executed in a spelling that post-dates Peter the Great's spelling reform in 1710, as well as its combination with Torzhok's gold embroidery, leads us to assert that the object was made at a later period and should be dated to the late 18th - early 19th century. Even so, the object remains extremely rare.
Provenance: private collection, France.
(Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection, The Metropolitan Museum of Art)
