Provenance: Philippe Hupel collection, Paris. Then by descent.
Our work in the "rayonnisme" style comes from the collection of Philippe Hupel. This atypical character, enamored of poetry, philosophy and freedom, who grew up and received a humanist education in post-war Paris, quickly distanced himself from his bourgeois milieu. Independent and non-conformist, he was attracted by the emergence of new theories and forms of expression in literature, music and painting. After working as a journalist in Bamako, and taking his first steps as a second-hand dealer at the Saint-Ouen flea market, he built up the capital to open his own gallery at the age of thirty, at 36, rue Mazarine in Paris. During the six years he spent running the gallery, Philippe Hupel ardently defended his interest in avant-garde artists. He was instrumental in introducing painters such as Natalia Goncharova, Stanley William Hayter, Robert Rauschenberg and Marie Vassilieff, to whom he dedicated two exhibitions in 1969 and 1971.
