BOULGAKOV, Mikhail (1891–1940) Notes of a Young Doctor [Text]: Short Stories. Library of the magazine “Ogonek” No. 23, ed. Pravda, Moscow, 1963. 56 pp., publisher’s binding, 6mo, A.B.E. (traces of moisture on the cover). BULGAKOV Mikhail (1891-1940) Notes of a Young Doctor [Text]: Short Stories. "Ogonek" Library No. 23, published by Pravda, Moscow, 1963. 56 pp., hardcover, 17 x 12 cm, fair overall condition (water stains on the cover). "Notes of a Young Doctor" is a collection of short stories by M. A. Bulgakov, published in 1925–1926 in the magazines "Medical Worker" and "Red Panorama." The collection includes the stories “The Towel with the Rooster,” “The Steel Throat,” “Baptism by Turn,” “The Blizzard,” “Egyptian Darkness,” “The Missing Eye,” and “Star Rash”. The six stories preserved in the writer’s archive were first published as a cycle in 1963 (Ogonyok Library, No. 23). The seventh story, “Star Rash,” was discovered and published only in 1981 by literary scholar Lydia Yanovskaya. In the 1963 publication, the title “Steel Throat” was changed to “Silver Throat,” and there were distortions and omissions in the text. The dating of the events was also changed: instead of Bulgakov’s 1917, 1916 appeared everywhere. This was likely done due to censorship and the publishers’ desire to align the time of the stories’ action with the time Bulgakov himself worked in the village of Nikolskoye, where he served as a district doctor.
