Jean Jules Henry GEOFFROY, known as GEO (1853–1924), Childre - Lot 20
Jean Jules Henry GEOFFROY, known as GEO (1853–1924), Children on a Carousel in Belleville (Paris) Oil on canvas Signed lower left: Geo 65 x 54 cm Geoffroy’s work focuses primarily on the world of children. He depicts them in their daily lives—at daycare or school, on the street, in both summer and winter, and sometimes also in hospitals or orphanages. He does not overlook leisure and play: we see them at the puppet show, in the garden, at the fair, and so on. Whether well-behaved, boisterous, or laughing, they always appear natural. Celebrated as the painter of children, Geoffroy participated in the 1890 Children’s Exhibition at the Petit Palais. His paintings were a huge hit with the public at the time. They still charm and captivate us today. We thank Mr. Mathieu for confirming the painting’s authenticity. It will be included in his catalogue raisonné, currently in preparation.
