Jean Jules Henry GEOFFROY, known as GEO (1853–1924), A quadr - Lot 21
Jean Jules Henry GEOFFROY, known as GEO (1853–1924), A quadriptych and two triptychs: scenes from the War of 1870? Ten oil paintings on canvas, in three frames Nine signed “Geo” in the lower right corner; one (from the quadriptych) is unsigned All bear the stamp of the art dealer Blanchet on the reverse, rue Bonaparte, Paris 34 x 24 cm each (quadriptych); 34 x 13.5 cm, 34 x 73.5 cm, 34 x 13.5 cm (triptych); 34 x 24 cm, 34 x 43 cm, 34 x 24 cm (triptych) No finished works based on these sketches are known to exist to date, making the identification of the subjects uncertain. Mr. Mathieu, an expert on the artist, believes they depict scenes from the 1870 war. It has also been suggested that the triptych—which shows, in the center, a group of young boys marching down a street decked with flags, rifles slung over their shoulders, may be a depiction of the “school battalions” established in 1882 to familiarize young boys with military training and abolished in 1892. As for the quadriptych, the hypothesis that it depicts scenes from the Revolution of 1848 has been put forward, as two panels indeed show a crowd cheering in front of City Hall for a man who appears to be wearing the costume of a representative of the people from the National Assembly of 1848. We thank Mr. Mathieu for confirming the authenticity of this set of paintings, which will be included in his catalogue raisonné currently in preparation.
