KRAMSKOY Ivan (1837-1887) - Lot 9
KRAMSKOY Ivan (1837-1887) Portrait of Maria Antonovna von Bistrom (1829 - ?) Sanguine, white paint and Italian pencil on paper Signed and dated "1865" on the right 84 x 66 cm (oval) Provenance: Luboshchinsky family collection, Europe. Maria Antonovna von Bistrom, daughter of General-Lieutenant Anton Antonovich von Bistrom (Otto von Bistrom) (1789-1854), Napoleonic War hero who distinguished himself at the battles of Klyastitsy, Polotsk and Kulm. Maria Antonovna first married Vasily Mikhailovich Bykov (1809-1856/61), then, from the 1960s, senator and State Council member Mark Nikolayevich Lyuboshchinsky (1818-1889). The painting presented at auction is a discovery of a previously unknown work by Ivan Kramskoi (1837-1887). One of the most legendary Russian artists of the 19th century, Ivan Kramskoy took part in the famous Riot of Fourteen at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts, and later became the leader of the "Artel" group of artists. He became the ideologue of the "Ambulants" movement and played a crucial role in its creation and operation. The author of numerous works of absolutely museum-quality, Kramskoy also distinguished himself through his extremely realistic and distinctive portraits. The portrait of Maria von Bistrom is executed in one of the author's favorite techniques, using Italian pencil with light touches of white paint. This technique imitates photography, but at the same time creates a lightness and precision of image that is absolutely unique. Famous works using this technique include portraits of G.G. Myasoedov, P.P. Chistyakov, N.A. Koshelev, A.I. Morozov, I.I. Shishkin. The portrait presented at the auction has never been exhibited publicly and has been kept in the Luboshchinsky family for several generations.
